Welcome to the Nelms Lab!
We study plant reproduction and genetics — asking how multicellular development shapes the transmission of genetic variation from one generation to the next, a question fundamental to both plant evolution and the future of crop genetics. Our work spans the origin and spread of new mutations through the plant body, the regulation of gene expression in the plant haploid phase, and reprogramming plant cell fate using transcription factors. We use functional genomics, high-throughput screening, and microscopy to connect developmental mechanisms to evolutionary and genetic consequences.
